Hungary’s largest visitable buffalo herd is located in the popular Kápolnapuszta Buffalo Reserve of Kis-Balaton, between Zalakomár and Balatonmagyaród. Visitors can explore an exhibition showcasing the wildlife of Kis-Balaton, a buffalo history display, and a walking path filled with playful elements. This reserve plays a vital role in the preservation and genetic conservation of the buffalo population native to Hungary, making it a popular center for showcasing the species.
The goal is also to present the animals to visitors in their natural environment, sometimes up close. Binoculars are available in the reserve to help visitors observe the animals, and with some luck, you can watch not only the wallowing or peacefully grazing buffaloes but also the nimble ground squirrels. For the delight of children, the reserve features a petting zoo, and some very tame kids graze freely along the walking path, eagerly awaiting their little friends’ affectionate hugs.
In the barn, old photographs and traditional tools provide insight into the history of buffalo keeping, while the exhibit in the visitor center showcases the rich wildlife of Kis-Balaton. At the end of the trip, while adults rest, children can enjoy the playground designed for them. The visitor center also offers publications, souvenirs, and refreshments.
